Trasimeno Lake

Testo alternativo

Lake Trasimeno is one of the most beautiful places in Umbria: pristine countryside, nature reserves, mediaeval small towns, castles, towers and fortresses.
In the middle of the lake there are three islands. Polvese island should not be missed.
The main centre of the Trasimeno area is Castiglione del Lago with its castle, Rocca del Leone and the Palazzo della Corgna. From Castiglione one can set out on a bicycle trip around the lake using the Trasimeno cycle path which runs through agrigultural land and alongside the reed beds on the edge of the lake. It passes Tuoro del Trasimeno, where Hannibal defeated the Roman army and there is the Campo del Sole museum, and arrives at Passignano sul Trasimeno. Continuing onward towards the southern lakeside one can reach Magione, to see the fantastic Castle of the Knights of Malta, and on the way stop at San Feliciano to visit the Museum of Fishing. Returning to Castiglione one should stop and eat fish or try Torta al Testo and the typical, traditional cooking of the Val di Chiana, of wine and oil.
Other places to visit near to the lake are Città della Pieve, the town of Perugino where art and nature unite divinely, and  the dear little town of Panicale.
There are many festivals from spring to autumn: the Tulip Festival, the Kite Festival which is poetically called “Let’s colour the skies”, Umbria Beat, Trasimeno Blues and the traditional boat race, Palio delle Barche.
The area of Trasimeno comprises the following municipalities of Perugia: Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Passignano sul Trasimeno, Magione, Panicale, Castiglione del Lago, Paciano, Città della Pieve e Piegaro.
