Norcia, Cascia and Preci represent the biggest mediaeval towns of the south-east part of Umbria, still in the province of Perugia, characterised by the greenest of landscapes, woods and mountains, which have given Umbria the name “Green heart of Italy”.
Norcia, enclosed by mediaeval walls, has kept its charm as a small town in the mountains. Preci, in the Monti Sibillini Park, dominates the Castoriana valley from on high. Cascia, the birthplace of Santa Rita, is one of the main spiritual centres of Umbria.
Places to visit in this area include the 13th century castle at Sant’Anatolia di Narco, the castle at Vallo di Nera, the monastery of San Giacomo at Cerreto di Spoleto.
There is wonderful food to be tasted in this area: shavings of black truffle, delicious salamis and cold meats prepared according to ancient recipes, pecorino cheese and the exquisite saffron from Cascia.
