Resting on the slopes of Monte Ingino, Gubbio is one of the oldest cities of Umbria. Perfectly preserved, Gubbio is home to architectural masterpieces which bear witness to its mediaeval history as a city-state. In the Municipal museum there is evidence of its ancient history as an Umbrian civilisation, dating back to the first centuries B.C.
The townscape is dominated by the huge structure of the Palazzo dei Consoli, one of the most beautiful public palaces in Italy. An example of Renaissance architecture is the Palazzo Ducale, in front of which rises the cathedral, a twelfth century Gothic church. Those mentioned here are only some of the many palaces, churches, squares and monuments to be seen at Gubbio.
Outside Gubbio one can visit the “Gola di Bottaccione”, the city walls with their six gateways which lead into the city. Around Gubbio one can enjoy the trails and scenery of the Monte Cucco park. Also to visit there is the small walled town of Sigillo, the mediaeval small town of Costacciaro, the Grottoes of Monte Cucco, the villages of Scheggia and Pascelupo, both surrounded by forests of ancient beeches.
Not to be missed at Gubbio is the “Festa dei Ceri”, an event on the 15th of May which features the race of the “Ceri”, tall wooden structures with saints’ statues at the top, one of the oldest and most moving folkloric events in Italy.
The Gubbio area comprises the following municipalities of Perugia Province: Scheggia e Pascelupo, Gubbio, Costacciaro, Sigillo, Fossato di Vico, Gualdo Tadino.
