To the north of Perugia is the Upper Valley of the Tiber, whose main centre is Città di Castello, an ancient Roman town and  powerful free “state” in the Middle Ages. In the town there are many well-preserved monuments which bear witness to its history. The Municipal Gallery which houses works by Raffaello, Luca Signorelli and Pomarancio, the cathedral museum and the 11th century cathedral.
Besides small towns such as Umbertide, where one can visit the Rocca Medioevale, San Giustino and its Castle Bufalini, the Upper Valley of the Tiber offers nature trails, numerous paths for trekking, mountain biking, horse-riding and canoeing.
In this area it is east to find and taste the highly valued white truffle, the famous meat products of Norcia such as mortadella, sausages and hams of wild boar, “le chicche” a very large filled pasta shape, salamis and mushrooms.

The Città di Castello area comprises the following municipalities of Perugia Province: Città di Castello, Citerna, San Giustino, Pietralunga, Montone, Umbertide, Lisciano Niccone, Monte Santa Maria Tiberina.
