Assisi Area

Assisi, the town of St. Francis is very moving, with the white stone of its buildings and the sincerity of its churches and basilicas, with its inspiration to a peaceful existence, with the scent of roses in the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli built around the ancient church of the “Porziuncola”, with the majesty of the Basilica Superiore and the works of art by Giotto and Cimabue, with the hermitage “Eremo delle carceri”, with its squares and palaces. Emotions reinforced by its position at the foot of  the Monte Subasio Park and the events which promote peace such as the Perugia Assisi peace march, The Mandir della Pace and the Cortona –Assisi Franciscan march.

In the area around Assisi we have the municipalities of Bastia Umbra, Bettona and Cannara.

Bettona is a town with Etruscan origins and is famous for its gardens within the walls. At Bettona one can admire a painting by Perugino, housed in the 13th century Palazzetto del Podestà.
At Bastia Umbra, where it is possible to visit monuments and churches, one should not miss the “Palio of St. Michael”, which takes place every year between the 20th and 28th of September and offers parades in costume, games and “La Lizza”  a type of relay race contested by the four quarters into which the town ids divided.
Besides the historical centre of Cannara, there is the Castle of Collemancio, a small mediaeval town nearby, where every September there is the Wine Festival. Another event not tobe missed is the Onion Festival, every September at cannara to celebrate its famous red onions.
