A land framed by the mountains and sea where it is possibile to retrace the Via Francigena in search of Romanesque parish churches and castles, of fortresses and lands of the Malaspina.
On the Apuan coast one can find fine pebble beaches and bathing facilities at Marina di Carrara, Marina di Massa, Ronchi, Poveromo, Montignoso and Cinquale; small historic towns such as Forno, Torano and Ponzanello.
The hinterland is characterised by the Lunigiana, a valley between the Apennines to the north and the Apuan Alps to the south, where there are peaks that reach almost 2000 metres above sea-level, such as Monte Pisanino, famous for providing Carrara marble.
There is an ancient tradition of marble, kept alive by the many workshops of artists using marble and by the museums, where one can learn the history and culture of these places.
