Livorno Area

Testo alternativo

A city by the sea, with a network of canals and one of the biggest ports of the Mediterranean.

Livorno, once a small village of unknown origins, was developed into a fortified port during the 16th century at the wishes of the Medici family for the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, with its cathedral and Piazza Grande in the centre.

The city has been developed over the centuries , absorbing late-baroque styles in the 18th century (to be found in the Venezia Nuova – New Venice – quarter, where  in the summer the folkloristic event  “Venice Effect” takes place), influences of the periods of French and Spanish  rule,  of the Restoration  when the Colognole aqueduct was built and the reconstruction after the Second World War.

Around Livorno, besides the Tuscan Arcipelago, the coast is lowland down to Piombino, characterised by small townships by the sea  with beaches and bathing areas (Castiglioncello, for example, with its Pasquino Castle). The land then rises from sea-level in the Romito area.

The Livorno Hills lie to the south-east of the city, where it is possible to follow numerous walks in the Monti Livornesi Regional Park.

The municipalities included in this area are all those of Livorno province, with the exception of those included in the Tuscan Archipelago area: Bibbona, Campiglia Marittima, Castagneto Carducci, Cecina, Colle Salvetti, Livorno, Piombino, Rosignano Marittimo, San Vincenzo, Sassetta, Suvereto.
